How a rock is built
Two systems, one hand-made surface
Inside every artificial rock there is an engineered structure. Left to right, each cutaway shows the layers from the skeleton to the finished, coloured stone. We choose the system by size, load and where the rock stands.
Steel frame system
For large rocks, cliffs, arches, waterfalls and anything people climb on or stand under.

Technology
How the surface is made
We choose the system by scale, location, weather and expected load. Steel structures, reinforcement and metal or composite mesh carry hand-sculpted cementitious and polymer-modified layers; on large projects hand carving can be combined with sprayed application. Lightweight elements and more complex forms are built on EPS/XPS cores with a suitable coating and structural system.
Every surface is carved by hand. We model individual cracks, geological strata, erosion and fractures, then build the colour in several layers, from patina to ageing. Water systems, LED lighting, mist and smoke can be integrated, and we plan for durability, ease of maintenance and safe operation from the start.
Hydraulics, pumps, filtration and waterproofing are designed and installed by specialist firms. We are responsible for the artistic layer and for its integration with the technical systems.
Before you commit
Questions to ask before you approve a rock
Two rocks that look alike from a distance can age very differently. Whoever builds yours should be able to answer these before work starts.
- Which layer system is behind the surface: structure, core, reinforcement, sculpted layer?
- Where does rainwater go, and is there drainage behind the rock or wall?
- How are the junctions with the ground and the building protected?
- Which protective coating is used, and when will it need renewing?
- How will maintenance staff reach pumps and services without damaging the scenery?
- What exactly does the warranty cover? Its length and conditions depend on the project and are set in the contract.
